From Kirsten:

My coaching style is built upon the insights into various aspects of climbing, training and performance that I have gained through my own experience as a keen new climber, a member of the GB Junior Climbing Team, a route setter and a performance coach.

I find myself envious of new climbers who are just at the beginning of their climbing journey and falling in love with the sport for the first time. Coaching is my way of sharing my love of climbing with you, the climber, and living vicariously through your progression and psyche.

Having trained and competed alongside some of the biggest names in UK competition climbing, I have firsthand experience of the mental and physical demands of training and competing at a national and international level. As a coach, I use what I have learned from my personal experience as a young athlete in order to help you in your own climbing goals, whether that means performing at a competition, sending your projects or preparing for a climbing trip.

My work as a route setter allows me to bring a perspective to coaching that not all climbers are lucky enough to have access to. In an obvious way, route setting is great for coaching as it allows me to create and adapt your training stimulus in order to create the perfect conditions to accelerate your learning through climbing. I am also able to pass on knowledge about the intricacies of movement and provide you with the tools to work out the route setter’s intentions when approaching a problem or route and use that insight to help unlock more complex sequences.

Over the years training and competing I fell in and out of love with climbing. Since then, I have found a balance that works for me. The turning point was when I began my journey as a coach and route setter. Suddenly I found this new level of psyche and sense of purpose that I had not experienced since I first started climbing. My aim is to use my own experiences, both the good and the bad, to help you, the climber, to find the right balance between your motivation to perform at your maximum potential, whilst not losing sight of your genuine love for climbing. Having worked as a coach for three years, I have a depth and breadth of experience that I can draw on to be adaptable to your specific goals as well as your individual learning style.
