Intrigued by The League?

As some of you will know, we have recently run our first informal, friendly competition, The League. The League is a series of week-long competitions in which you try the twenty problems and score yourself, and then hand your scorecard in at the end to see how you did and to be entered into the raffle for some exciting prizes.

We found this first round of The League was a massive success! We had great feedback from you lot, a common point being that it forced us to try problems on the competition wall that we might not usually have tackled. Also, the fact that the problems are not graded means that again, you have more of an unbiased go at them, with no preconceptions of ‘this will be too hard for me, I won’t get it!’ This can be great for your climbing and also for your confidence – I know a lot of people were pleasantly surprised by what they managed.

You can find the results for each category on our website – well done to all that took part!

We decided from the outset not to offer prizes for podium spots. We want the competition to be about taking part, having fun, and pushing yourself in new ways you might not usually do. We don’t want to be elitist, rank people, or put people off from entering. This is not to say that the people with the highest scores have not achieved something excellent, but that everyone has achieved something excellent. The prizes we offered in the raffle were picked out of a hat (well, boulder bucket really!) and the lucky winners were drawn out on our social media. Top prize this month was a private coaching session with GB coach and Volume 1’s head coach Be Fuller.

We will be running the next rounds of The League on different walls in the centre such as the slabs, again, to ensure that we are being fair to all – we know that the competition wall is possibly the most intimidating wall in the centre and we’d like to give the balance experts among our community a chance to show off!

Watch our social media and catch up with staff in the coming weeks to find out when the next round of The League begins!
