Our performance coach James Hickman, will work with you to tailor the session to your needs and to ensure you see the biggest gains in your climbing.

Who is coaching for?

If you have been climbing for more than 6 months then you could benefit from our performance coaching. James have a wide experience of working with people of all abilities and will be able to adapt the session to whatever level you are currently at.

How do the sessions work?

All our performance coaching sessions are run as 1:1 to make sure that you get all of the focus. During the session the coach will get to know more about your current climbing level and what you hope to achieve. They will then tailor the session to best meet these needs through a range of exercises and drills to help you make that progress.

What options are there?

Below you can read more about our James’s approach and coaching style. Once you are happy, you can then book online your first 1:1 session. After the session, you will have the option to sign up to regular coaching via one of our coaching memberships or you can just book adhoc sessions as and when you feel then need. There are discounts available when you sign up to one of our coaching memberships.

James Hickman

James been involved in the climbing industry for over ten years, working as a climbing instructor, coach, and route setter. As well as a climbing coach, he is also a qualified sports therapy graduate of the University of Chichester.

James is our Junior Team Manager here at Volume 1 working with our most talented individuals to help them progress with their climbing at help them compete at regional and national levels, alongside supporting their goals such as outdoor climbing.

Whilst James is a fantastic junior coach, he is able to work with those at all ages and levels and apply his innovative coaching practice to help people realise their potential.

We know that the fit has to be right between climbing coach and climber and you need to make sure that you understand what you will be able to get out of coaching before you sign up to any training plan or regular programme.

Our 1:1 sessions are 2 hours long and will not only give our coaches a chance to understand where your current level is at but also find out more about your goals and previous climbing and sporting history. This 2 hour session will also enable you to understand your coaches methodology and if this will work for you and what you want to get out of coaching.

Once you have completed a 1:1 session, you then have the option of either continuing to book sessions adhoc or if you are looking for regular coaching then we recommend moving on to one of our coaching memberships.

If you have completed a 1:1 session and you are then looking for some regular coaching then we recommend one of our coaching memberships.

All of our coaching memberships INCLUDE monthly membership to the wall making them exceptionally good value for what is on offer. This also gives you the benefits such as discount in our shop and free access to our Weekly and Womxn’s Sessions.

Option 1 - Monthly

Coaching: 1 x 2 hour session per month

Cost: £120 per month

Option 2 - Fortnightly

Coaching: 2 x 2 hour sessions per month

Cost: £180 per month

Option 3 - Weekly

Coaching: 4 x 2 hour sessions per month

Cost: £280 per month

If you are interested in signing up for a coaching membership then have a talk with your climbing coach and they will be happy to advise on the best option for you and let you know the process for signing up. There is a minimum 3 month commitment to all of our coaching memberships to ensure that our coaches are able to get the most out of their time with you.

TRAINING PLANS

If you would also like a training plan to go alongside your 1:1 coaching then James is able to offer these. These will typically be a 12 week plan that is paid for monthly in addition to your coaching membership. The cost to add this on is £25 per month. This price will include a training plan issued each month for the upcoming 4 weeks and regular check ins with your coach in addition to the 1:1 coaching sessions you will have.
